Neighbors

Our neighbors are the faces of RTP – the folks that welcome us into their homes and enable us to do purposeful work that improves not only the condition of their housing, but the communities where they live, and the safety and vibrancy of their daily lives.

Meet Melissa’s Family

In Elizabeth, PA, 8 families received home repairs through a joint effort of professional contractors and volunteer groups with varying skill levels. Ms. Melissa’s family witnessed two volunteer days with Bechtel which transformed their house into a home. Prior to the work day with Bechtel, Melissa’s two grandsons, whom she adopted, shared a bedroom in need of significant repair.

To repair the shared bedroom and make a second bedroom, volunteers removed damaged ceiling tiles, rebuilt dividing walls, installed new ceilings, sealed and painted the rooms, and laid new carpet.

“I wasn’t expecting how much they did! They were wonderful!” Melissa reflected.

Before the volunteers left, they put up the finishing touches by installing the boy’s name in each room. In 15 and 12 years respectively, “this is the first time the boys have their own room!” rejoiced Melissa. “After the boy’s rooms were finished, the boys wanted to sleep on their new carpeted floor!”
